EMERGENCY’S MINISTRY REPORT

EARTHQUAKE IN YOGYAKARTA, 27 MAY 2006

Our God is good! On Thursday night-25 May 2006 we arranged music concert

“Everybody Sing” by Dave Bilbrough, worship leader from Kingsway Music England,

in Yogyakarta for gathering fund to buy Bibles for Christians people, earthquake

victims, in Nias. At that moment we also  introducing “FRONTIER CRISIS RESPONSE

NETWORK” (FCRN) to the local churches. On Friday morning at 05.45 a.m I and Dave Bilbrough went to Denpasar, so we’re save from earthquake which hit Yogyakarta on Saturday morning at 05.55 a.m!

Our God is good! On Saturday at 05.55 a.m, our 2 partners in NAT (Agustin

and Elizabeth) are still in Yogya. At that time, they slept in a hotel and then

shaken by earthquake. They run out of the hotel, they’re very panic because

there’s a rumor that Tsunami would also hit the city. But it wasn’t true, so

they backed to the hotel and took their things. By God’s help, finally they

found a bus (the only bus left) which took them back to Surabaya. An

unforgetable experience!

Gathering Aid for Earthquake’s Victims in Yogyakarta

Indeed, we’ve planned to take a rest after arranged 4 days music concert by

Dave Billbrough for gathering fund to buy Bibles for Christians people,

earthquake victims, in Nias, but because of the earthquake so we immediately

contacted our ministry’s partners and also local churches in Yogya which we ever

served to coordinate for gathering emergency aid.

Immediately we contacted churches in Surabaya and brethrens ”Friends of

Life” for gathering aid and coordinating with BAMAG Jatim (An Association of

Churches in East Java) in ”Love from East Java!” program for earthquake victims

in Yogya. On that Saturday immediately BAMAG delegated  Herman Pontoh (the

general secretary) to observe earthquake’s location in Yogya and cooperate with

local churches there.

On Sunday 28 May 2006 some churches began to collect contribution from

congregation either medicines, clothes, sanitary napkins, food or money. After

we got news from Herman Pontoh, we began to deliver aid to Yogya on Monday

night.

Aid Delivery

Monday morning 29 May was the busy and tiring day, in the morning we attend

coordination meeting in BAMAG office, then we bought things for earthquake

victims. Congregation of GKA Elyon church (Protestant church) and GKA Gloria

church (Protestant church)contributed medicines, while the others contributed

money which we used to buy T-shirts, underwears, food, biscuit, blankets,

kerosene lamps, tents, etc. Only in 3 days post the eartquake some churches and

institutions participated for gathering aid such as GKT Hosana Citra Raya

(Protestant church), GKKA Arjuna (Protestant church), GPPS, Gloria SMP (Yunior

High School) and SMU (Senior High School), Pelangi Kristus school, also from

some people, even from Jayapura. All of aid was loaded in 2 trucks. At 10 p.m we

(24 persons) went by 5 cars and 2 trucks.

Network of Local Churches Posts

Arrived in Klaten the group was divided into 2, one group delivered aid to

GPDI Fajar Pengharapan Post (Charismatic church), the other delivered aid to

GKJW Bantul Post (Protestant church). In this emergency condition, church opens

public kitchen to serve local people without discriminates their religion. From

Klaten we delivered aid to GBI Alithea Yogya Post (Charismatic church), then by

local youth’s help we’re accompanied to deliver aid to GKJW Bantul Post

(Protestant church), then to GKI Post (Protestant church) and Elizabeth Hospital

(Catholic).

Furthermore, we delivered aid to GKI Ngupasan Post (Protestant church),

there we’ve been waited by the Head of NGO Habitat-Yogya. After we took a rest

and collected information there, we continued to deliver aid to GKKD Post

(Protestant church) “Love Yogya” then backed to Surabaya. There’re 3 other Posts

which we hadn’t visited yet: Bahana Post, JDS Post (City Prayer Network) and

YCS (Yogya Christian Society) Post. From visit to these Posts, we establish

emergency aid network for delivering the following aid.

Earthquake’s impact

Although strength of earthquake in Yogya is lower than in Nias, but the

impact is more than in Nias because Yogya is more densely populated city (more

than 70% population in Indonesia lives in Java). If earthquake in Nias caused

300 victims, then in Yogya caused 6.500 victims even it’s predicted can reach

10.000 victims.

Aid distribution is more difficult because the victims were spread in vast

area even in outlying places. Many buildings and housings were completely

damaged, even in Yogya almost all plazas and malls (except Malioboro Mal), and

many hotels also other concrete buildings were thoroughly cracked.

Urgent Need

At this moment, earthquake victims’ condition is bad. Plundering everywhere

because aid distribution by Sarkolak or other government institutions is too

slow because of needelessly long bureaucracy. After earthquake, heavy rain fell

for 2 days at a stretch, and there’s no place for taking shelter for victims

because all of buildings were damaged.

Local chuch posts are very helpful because they directly face with society

need and also practise. From church posts we got urgent need for this moment,

such as: tents, tarpaulins, kerosene lamps, lanterns, flashlights, dry-cell

battery, rice, noodles, drinking water, canned food, sugar, gasoline,

cooking-oil, baby milk, food for children under 5 years old, eucalyptus oil,

ointment, medicine, sanitary napkins, underwears, clothes, etc. Also volunteers,

medics and paramedics who’re willing to help in those posts.

Through this writing, we ask local churches and brethrens “Friends of Life”

to help for these soul salvation.

Mission Training – Heart Which Loves Others

We ask local churches to mobilize congregation, particularly youth to become

humanity volunteers in Yogya. They can go, divided in groups, we can help to

place them in local church posts to help humanity aid distribution for

earthquake victims.

This humanity service is a good moment for local church to train Christian

youth to have heart which cares about social life, heart which loves others, so

since youth they already have mission heart, then they’ll become the mission

next church generation. God bless! (Heru Tjandra Mulia).
