TAKING IT TO THE STREETS

From his Jermyn Street Theatre Evenings, Dave Bilbrough offers some practical advice to bring worship into the wider world

Become familiar with the wider music culture outside your church. Do some research and see what’s happening. You may have reached a good standard of musicianship, but there’s always another level.

The venue doesn’t have to be a theatre, but it’s an ideal environment because you’re stepping into your audience’s territory – rather than expecting them to enter yours (ie a church hall). Also, the theatre will usually feature your event on their newsletter.

Don’t be afraid to set an admission charge for your event. If it’s going to be good quality, then it will cost. Putting a price on it means it has value.

While thinking about the sound system to use, don’t forget the lighting you might need, too. Time and money need to be spent on creating the right environment.

Make sure the promotion and advertising are right – many decent events have been let down on that score. Professional photos and graphics create the right impression.

Look for as many connections as possible with your audience. You’re reaching out to people who are on a journey. Use common themes and references points – perhaps from music and TV - as familiar landmarks they can identify with. Avoid jargon!

Remember you’re communicating not just with the audience, but also with the staff of the venue you’re using. Don’t disregard them – they’re an important part of the mission field. It’s a process of building trust.

Last but not least – don’t underestimate the power of prayer! You’re taking the gospel into new territory, so pray for openings and breakthroughs.
